If you are a small business owner in India, you may have searched for “Udyam Registration”, “MSME Registration”, or even “Udyog Aadhaar Registration” and wondered whether these are different registrations.
The short answer is: Udyam Registration is the current official MSME registration system in India. “MSME Registration” is a broader term commonly used to describe the process of registering a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise. The older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system has been replaced by Udyam Registration.
In simple words, MSME is the business category, while Udyam Registration is the official registration process used to identify and register eligible MSME businesses. But there is more to understand.
What Is MSME Registration?
MSME Registration is a common term used for registering a business under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises framework. MSME stands for:
- M: Micro
- S: Small
- M: Medium
- E: Enterprises
The MSME framework is governed by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. The purpose of MSME registration is to help eligible businesses become part of the formal MSME system and access benefits and support available for the sector.
In the past, businesses used different registration systems, including Entrepreneurs Memorandum (EM-II) and later Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM). The Government introduced Udyam Registration in 2020 to create a simpler and more digital registration system. So, when someone today says, “I want MSME Registration,” they usually mean Udyam Registration.
What Is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the Government of India’s official registration mechanism for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The system was launched on 1 July 2020, replacing the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum system. The new framework introduced a composite classification based on both investment and turnover, rather than using only investment criteria with separate treatment for manufacturing and service enterprises.
Today, an eligible enterprise can register through the official Udyam portal and receive a permanent registration number and Udyam Registration Certificate.
Udyam Registration Classification: Micro, Small and Medium
One of the biggest changes to the MSME framework came into effect on 1 April 2025, when the investment and turnover limits were increased.
The current classification is:

These limits apply from 1 April 2025. The Ministry of MSME subsequently clarified that the enhanced classification limits apply for all purposes from that date.
Who Can Apply for Udyam Registration?
Eligible businesses that fall under the MSME classification can apply for Udyam Registration online.
This can include businesses involved in:
- Manufacturing
- Services
- Trading, where applicable under the rules
- Other eligible business activities
Is Udyam Registration Mandatory?
Udyam Registration is the official mechanism for formally identifying an enterprise as an MSME under the current registration framework. but, being an MSME by classification and having Udyam Registration are not the same concept in legal or scheme context.
Businesses should therefore check the eligibility and registration requirements of the particular government scheme, tender, credit facility or benefit they want to use. This is important because Udyam Registration can be relevant when accessing various MSME schemes, government procurement opportunities and mechanisms relating to delayed payments.
What Are the Benefits of Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration can provide formal identity for an eligible MSME and can make it easier for businesses to access government programs and MSME related facilities, subject to the rules of the particular scheme.

Udyam Registration and MSME delayed payments
For Micro and Small Enterprises, delayed payments can create serious cash-flow problems. Under the MSMED Act framework, where payment is delayed beyond the applicable statutory period, eligible Micro and Small Enterprises can seek remedies through the relevant Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council. The Ministry states that the statutory framework addresses delayed payments and that cases can be filed through the government’s delayed-payment mechanisms.
This makes Udyam registration particularly relevant for eligible businesses that sell goods or services to other businesses or government-related buyers.
Does Udyam Registration Need Renewal?
No. Udyam Registration does not require periodic renewal.
The official portal describes the Udyam Registration Number as permanent and states that there is no need for renewal. The certificate is issued online and includes a dynamic QR code that can be used to access the enterprise’s information on the portal.
Businesses should, however, ensure that their information remains accurate and updated when required.
Final thought: Udyam Registration or MSME Registration?
The difference between Udyam Registration and MSME Registration is mainly a difference in terminology and the registration system being referred to.
- MSME describes a category of businesses: Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
- Udyam Registration is the current Government of India registration system through which eligible enterprises can register as MSMEs.
The old Udyog Aadhaar system has been replaced by Udyam Registration. The current process is online, paperless and through the official portal. It provides an Udyam Registration Number and certificate and does not require regular renewal.
